Memorial Services For Roland Boys At Salem Chruch

Roland, Oct. 1: Salem's Lutheran Church was filled to capacity on Sunday afternoon when memorial services were held for Carroll Gjerde and William Quam. The church was beautifully decorated with baskets of red dahlias and pastel shade of gladioli. White gladioli were the back ground for the pictures of the deceased and tall lighted white tapers were on either side. The Roland Post 307, American Legion had charge of the services and the American Auxiliary attended in the body as did the members of the graduating classes.

William Donald Quam, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Quam, was born at Roland, Iowa, August 25, 1924, baptized and confirmed in Salem Lutheran church. He graduated from Roland High School May 11, 1943, and inducted into the Army in January 1944.

He received his military training at Fort McClellan, Ala., and Camp Shelby, Ga., and after six months of training was sent overseas to England in July 1944, and within a few weeks to France where he was killed in action on September 25, 1944 having been overseas less than two months and in the army eight months. He was 20 years and one month old at the time of this death

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Quam, three brothers, Vern of Burlington, Rueben of Lawlor, and Walter at home, and five sisters, Mrs. Laura Maroney of Nevada, Mrs. Esther McLeod, of Hawarden, Mrs. Wilma Hill, of Oakland, California, Mrs. Avis Robinson, of Tucson, Arizona and Mrs. Annabelle Davis of Mason City.
