Funeral rites for JOHN ERWIN PATTEN, 89, a longtime resident of the county, were held Sunday afternoon at the Lily Funeral Home, with Rev. Theodore Maule of the Church of Christ, in charge and Mrs. Armstrong at the organ. A representative group of old-time neighbors and friends of the deceased gathered with the members of the family for the brief yet impressive services. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. Casket bearers were James Kinsella, T J Foley, M J Foley, George Taylor, E B Ayers and Maurice Alderman.The following brief life sketch of the deceased was read by the minister during the service.John Erwin Patten, who on April 29 passed his 89th anniversary, died late last Wednesday, May 05, 1943, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milos Olsan, 836 Seventh St, Nevada where he had made his home for the past two years. He was a son of John and Anna Salisbury Patten, born in Putnam County, IL. At the age of five he went with his parents to LaSalle County, IL where he grew to manhood and was married to Lucy Frost, their home continuing on the old Patten family homestead. In 1906 they came to Iowa, locating first in Green County, where the family remained until 1910, when they came over into Boone County and later to a farm near Ames. Mrs. Patten passed away in Feb. of 1939.He is survived by six children. They are Roland Patten of Ontario, Mrs. Hazel Olsan of Nevada, Mrs. Faye DeFore of Ames, Mrs. Pearl Wilson of near Ames, Mrs. Ruth Taylor of Nevada, and Mrs. Helen Wilson of Santa Monica, CA. The grandchildren are Mrs. Ralph Hungate of Ames, Sgt. Wayne Olsan of the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed at Tucson, AZ; Wallace Olsan of Nevada, Terry and Dixie Lee Taylor of Nevada and Delores Wilson of near Ames. There is also one great grandchild, Robert Lee Hungate of Ames. Mr. Patten lived in a most interesting time of the world’s history, having experienced the changes of the 19th century in the first half of his lifetime and during the latter half of his life, the developments of the 20th century unfolded before him.
