Funeral Services For Joseph Dodd Were Held At Collins

Collins, April 13--Funeral services for the late Joseph S. Dodd who passed away at his home at 3:35 p.m. on Friday, April 2, after a lingering illness, was held from the Church of Christ at Collins, Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Arnold, of Baxter in charge. Music consisted of two duets, "The Old Rugged Cross," and "No Not One," by the Rev. Arnold and daughter Sylvia and a solo, "God's Tomorrow," by Rev. Arnold, with Mrs. Arnold at the piano. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Chole Shaffer and Mrs. Ella Dodd. Burial was in the Poorbaugh cemetery east of Colfax with Arthur Dodd, Floyd Dodd, Otis Dodd, Chris Shafter, Henry Dodd and Myrl Brown pallbearers.

The following life sketch was read at the service.

Joseph Shelby Dodd, son of William Wallace and Malinda Baker Dodd, was born in Jasper County, Iowa, March 9, 1871 and passed away April 2, 1943 at the age of 72 years and 24 days. Mr. Dodd received his education in the Jasper county schools and spent all of his early life near Colfax, Iowa.

January 1, 1893 he was united in marriage to Florence Stinson. To this union five sons and three daughters were born. Those living are Mrs. Beulah Hunter of Mingo, Lester Dodd, of Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Elba DeCamp, of Newton, Mrs. Frances Burgus, of Osceola and Loyal Dodd.

Mr. Dodd lived a number of years at Lorimor and later moved to Colorado and then to Wyoming where on March 18, 1919 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Pearl Smith at Sheridan, Wyo. To this union was born one son and two daughters. They are Robert Shelby in the service in Hawaii, Betty Louise and Gladys Jo both at home. He also had one step-daughter, Mrs. LaVon Anderson, of Des Moines. Mr. Dodd returned to Iowa in 1924, the past 19 years being spent near Osceola, Colfax and Collins.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and the above named children, 21 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also one sister and two brothers namely, Mrs. Pearl Jeffers of Colo; Ray Dodd of Lorimor and Orin Dodd of Ainsworth, Neb., and a large number of other relatives and friends. Early in life he united with the Bethel Wesleyan Methodist church, and he had also been a Mason for over 30 years. He spent the majority of his life in farming and the buying and selling stock.

He was highly esteemed by all who knew him and was always ready to help any who were in need. He possessed a cheerful disposition, always looking upon the bright side of life even in the time of trouble and severe pain. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
