Funeral at Collins for Late Pioneer, Mrs. Ida Signs

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Ida M. Signs, of Collins, who died at her home late Thursday night, Feb. 11, from a heart attack, were held from the local Methodist church Sunday at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. David Arnold of Baxter in charge. Sylvia Arnold and Edwin Arnold, with Mrs. D. E. Arnold as pianist sang, "The Upper Garden" and "In the Garden." Rev. Arnold closed the service with the song "God's Tomorrow" which he sang as a solo.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged in such a manner as to make the pulpit and altar seem like a garden of flowers with a lighted cross and candles in the background. These lovely flowers were a mute testimony to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held and also that all remembered her passionate love for flowers. The care and arrangement of the flowers were in charge of Mrs. J. H. Boyd of Baxter, Miss Calla Wood, Mrs. O. N. Serbein and Mrs. J. I. Kimberley of Collins.

Interment was in Restland cemetery at Baxter with Clyde Keagle, John I. Kimberley, Dewey Kern, P. J. Wetrich, A. W. Kracht and Wm. Fitzgerald acting as pallbearers. Ushers at the church were Curtis Marsh and O. N. Serbein. The following brief life sketch of the deceased was read at the service by Rev. Arnold.

"Ida M. Hampton, daughter of Riley and Sarah Hampton was born Nov. 5, 1861 near Clyde, Jasper County, Iowa. She departed this life at her home in Collins, Thursday night, Feb. 11, 1943 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 6 days.

"She grew to womanhood in the community in which she was born and on Nov. 7, 1880 she was united in marriage to Emery Signs. To this union six children were born, the eldest, Earl passing away at the age of 6 years.

"The family home was established in Clear Creek, Jasper County and that community was their home until 1923 when they moved to their present home in Collins. It was here that Mrs. Signs died Nov. 9, 1926.

"She was converted in early life and became a member of the Methodist Protestant church near her country home. After moving to Collins she transferred her membership to the Methodist church there. She loved the church and was faithful in attendance as long as health permitted. She believed in the power of prayer and because of this belief her life will always be a beautiful memory for her family and friends.

"She is survived by five children, Mrs. Jessie Shuey and Mrs. Ora Hanson of Collins, Mrs. Alta Nicodemus of Colfax, Mrs. Pearl Jones and Edd Signs of Baxter. There are seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Hughes of Mapleton, Kansas, and Mrs. Cornelia Crosby of Gering, Nebraska, two brothers, W. D. and A. J. Hampton also of Gering and a large number of more distant relatives and friends.

"Mrs. Signs lived a beautiful Christian life, a life of faith backed up by loving deeds and noble services. She was a Christian mother of the highest type ever lifting her loved ones and friends up to the throne of Grace in supplication and prayer, praying that they might all have the greatest gift that it is possible to obtain in this life, the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. So we rejoice to day that we know she in now enjoying the great gift herself in the presence of her Lord and Savior and in the blessed companionship of her departed loved ones."

The services were largely attended and among those from a distance were Mrs. Lucian Hineker, Waukegon, Ill., Hansel S. Hanson, Evanston, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hampton and Mrs. C. C. Hampton, Gering, Neb., Mrs. Jennie Hughes, Eldon Loar and Miss Aletha Loar, Mapleton, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Signs and Wayne Signs, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McMain, Newton. Many others from Nevada, Colfax, Baxter, Mingo and State Center.
