Fatal Crash on Highway No. 65 Causes Death

Mrs. William Hansen Was Fatally Injured In Crush of Cars

A fatal crash cost the life of Mrs. William Hansen, 39, of Milford township and seriously injured her daughter, Sally, 16, and a son, Charles, 9, who received skull fractures and other injuries and injured another daughter Barbara, 13, and Mr. Hansen, driver of the car.

The accident occurred seven miles north of Colo, on No. 65, Sunday afternoon about 2:30. The Hansen family were returning home and turned onto the highway near what is known as Carmody corner, just as a car from LaCrosse, Wis., driven by Lee Hiles was going south. It struck the Hansen car just back of the door.

The LaCrosse party consister of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schomers, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hiles and Mrs. L. J. Schams, daughter of Mrs. Hiles. Mrs. Schams suffered a leg injury, a broken rid and bruises, and was taken to the Iowa sanitarium while the others proceeded to Perry, where the men are engaged in business.

Didn't See Car

It is apparent that Mr. Hansen did no see the approaching car but drove onto the highway and where the cars hit, both were whirled around on the pavement, but neither turned over.

Mrs. Hansen was thrown against the windshield then from the car suffering a broken neck, from which she died instantly. The injured children were thrown from the car and through a barbed wire fence, into an adjoining field.

First to the accident were Dr. N. B. Nutty and Ray Connelly of Zearing, who gave aid and helped the injured to the hospital at Nevada. The body of Mrs. Hansen was removed to a mortuary. The Hansen family had attended church in Nevada, and on the way home had stopped near Zearing to look at a pony they contemplated buying for the son, "Chuck."

Both the Buick "8" beloning to the Wisconsin people and the Hansen Oldsmobile were badly damaged and it will take some time to have the necessary repairs made.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hansen will be held Thrusday at 2:30 at Memorial Lutheran church with her pastor, Dr. J. O. Simon in charge. Burial will be in the Nevada cemetery. The body will be at the Morfoot funeral home until time for the funeral services.

There is little if any change to report in the condition of Sally, 16, and Charles, 9, seriously injured in the auto crash Sunday afternoon. The children are still at Iowa sanitarium and unconscious. The father was able to be removed to his home late Tuesday and the sister, Barbara, is at the home of a relative in Nevada.
