Funeral Rites Held Thursday for Mrs. Will Troup

Special to the Journal.
Maxwell, Nov. 8 -- Funeral rites for Anna Troup were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Presbyterian church where the main auditorium was filled with relatives and friends. The altar and casket were banked with most beautiful floral offerings.

The services were in charge of a former pastor, Rev. H. D. Robinson of Des Moines, assisted by the present pastor, Rev. C. E. Burdine.

A male quartet composed of Clark John and son Dale John and Ross Olinger and son Claire Olinger, sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Nearer Still Nearer." Mrs Ray Gooden sang "Sunrise Tomorrow." The pallbearers were Harry Gibon, C. R. Henson, B. M. Kirkman, C. W. Packer, W. B. Holland and Ed Wickard. Burial was in the Brethren cemetery south of Maxwell.

Mrs. Troup was a woman of exceptionally fine character and was loved and respected by all who knew her. While her entire life had been devoted to her home and church, yet she always found time to extend needed aid and charity in the case of neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and a charter member of the local American Legion Auxiliary.

A part of the life sketch as read by Rev. Robinon follows:

"Sarah Anna Garlock, daughter of George and Mary Garlock, was born in Mahoning county, Ohio, Sept. 15, 1864, and passed away at her home south of Maxwell, Nov. 5, 1940, at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 21 days.

"Her parent emigrated to Iowa when she was 2 1/2 years old, and established a home in Washington township, Polk county, in the Mt. Zion neighborhood. Early in life she chose the faith of he Saviour and joined the Mt. Zion Evangelical church, serving as a faithful member. About 1915, she transferred her membership to the Maxwell Presbyterian church. She was an active worker in the church and was a member of the Mite Society.

"She was united in marriage to William I. Troup on Feb. 25, 1892, at the home of her parents. To this union three children were born--a daughter, L. Inez, and two sons, Harry and Hugh. The daughter (later Mrs. M. H. Johansen) preceded her mother in death in 1936.

"She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband and sons Harry and Hugh; son-in-law, M. H. Johansen; a brother, Will Garlock of Cambridge; a sister, Mrs. Katherine Applegate of Kansas City, Mo., four grandchildren, Mureen, Jolen, Harriett and Charles William Troup of Maxwell."

Relatives from out of town attending the rites were Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Devilbiss of Ottawa, Kans.; Rolla Troup of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. George McKim and Miss Hazel McKim of Des Moines; M. H. Johansen of Greene; Will Garlock, Mrs. Dell Garlock, Miss Lola Garlock and Mrs. Ethel King of Cambridge.

Walter Troup and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Baldwin of Altoona; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Pike of Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Jackson of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Barber and Mr. and Mrs. Basil Cord of Des Moines.
