"Isabell Mead-Snelling was born February 3, 1854, near Blenheim, Ontario. When a small child she was left an orphan and was taken into the home of an aunt where she made her home until she grew to womanhood. With her aunt and family they came to Iowa in the year 1868 and located in Story county in the Johnson Grove community. At the age of fifteen years she gave her life to Christ and joined the Methodist church at Johnson Grove. She took interest in the work of the church and taught a Sunday school class for several years.
"She was united in marriage to Fleming B. Snelling, January 20, 1874. To this union four children were born, Lessie May, who died when a small child; R. D. Snelling, who died in infancy; Jennie Snelling-Roll, who preceeded her mother in death; and Edith Snelling Gates of Ames, Iowa.
"Mr. and Mrs. Snelling made their home in the Johnson Grove community until the year 1897 when they moved to Nevada, Ia. They lived in Nevada until eleven years ago when Mr. Snelling's health failed. They closed their home in Nevada and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where they made their home and were cared for by their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Roll. Mrs. Snelling passed away July 23, 1929.
"Her daughter, Mrs. Gene Roll, died three years ago.
"Mrs. Snelling remained in her son-in-law's home and was cared for in such a manner she said many time to her friends that words would not express her appreciation. Mrs. Snelling departed this life July 29, 1939, aged 85 years, 5 months, 26 days.
"She leaves to mourn her departure her daughter, Edith Gates of Ames; her son-in-law, Gene Roll, of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Mrs. Hazel Eller of Ames, Iowa; and Mrs. Gladys Poppe of Ledyard, Iowa; eight great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends."
