Final Rites Held Friday Afternoon for Chas. S. Gamble

The funeral services for Charles S. Gamble, 63, Nevada cafe proprietor, who died at his home here early Wednesday morning, were held Friday.

A brief service was held at the Morfoot Funeral home on Eighth street at 11 o'clock. During the early afternoon, the funeral cortege drove to Maxwell where the funeral was conducted at the Maxwell Presbyterian church with Rev. Jos. M. Kennedy of the Central Presbyterian church, Nevada, in charge.

Following the services in Maxwell, the body was returned to Nevada and interment was in the Nevada cemetery.

The services were attended by a large group of relatives and friends gathered to pay their final tribute of earthly respect to Mr. Gamble, a member of one of the pioneer families of the south part of the county.

The life sketch as read by the minister follows:

Charles Samuel Gamble was born on a farm one mile west of Maxwell on September 26, 1872. He was the son of J. D. and Elizabeth Gamble, the next to the youngest in a family of thirteen children. As a boy he worked with his father on the farm and attended the local school in Maxwell. He later engaged in livestock and farming operations with his brother, Will, also helping his mother in the care of the home farm.

He was married on June 4, 1902, to Miss Maude Sutherland of Baraboo, Wisconsin. The newly married couple established their home on a farm one mile west of the home place where Charles continued his farm and livestock interests. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gamble, Ruth (now Mrs. Ruth Pier) and Elizabeth, both residing now in Stockton, Cal., and James D. of Nevada, Ia.

The family moved to Maxwell in 1915 and resided there until 1923 when Mr. Gamble became associated with the Mule Head ranch near Ida Grove, Iowa. Since 1930 the family have made their home in Nevada where Mr. Gamble was proprietor of the Gamble Cafe.

During his lifetime Mr. Gamble had many active interests. He was long known as one who could engage successfully in large and varied activities. He was of friendly and generous disposition and was much loved for his sense of humor and his kindliness.

"He became a member of the Presbyterian church of Maxwell as a young man and he thoughtfully and generously helped with the work of the church, encouraging the members of his family in their religious life also.

"Besides his loving wife, his two daughters and his son, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Susan Golden, Mrs. Jane Richardson, Mrs. Addie Douglass and Mrs. Carrie Tipton and also by one brother, Mr. William Gamble. One sister, Mrs. Maggie E. Fish, preceded him in death by a few hours. She will be laid to rest from her home in Collins this afternoon.

"Death came to him after a tedious illness of several weeks, shortly after midnight on the morning of February 26th at the age of 63 and 5 months. He will be greatly missed by the members of his family and by the neighbors and friends whose friendship he valued so highly."
