From Nevada Representative January 31, 1900 (page 5)

DIED--At her home in Slater, Saturday, January 20, 1900, Mrs. Carrie Viland, aged 63 years, 10 months, 9 days.

Mrs. Viland's death occurred about 8 o'clock on the date above mentioned and was a shock to all about her. She moved into town a couple of weeks before Christmas, and was quite sick for some tie, but later recovered sufficiently to be up and about a little every day. On the Thursday before her death she was about as usual, though not feeling well. Friday during the day and following night she was very sick, but no serious resultx were looked for by those who attended her. Early in the morning her son, Osmond, who was staying with her, went down town to summon a doctor, and few moments after his return home she breathed her last. The doctor was engaged on an other case and did not arrive until some time after her death.

Mrs. Carrie Viland was born in Aalund, Norwya, March 11, 1836. At the death of her father, which occurred in her infancy, she was taken to the home of an aunt, and there adopted. At the age of about 25 she was married to Knute Viland, with whom she immigrated to America in 1866. They lived a while at Leland, Illinois, but moved the same year to Story county, Iowa, where they spent the remained of their lives. In 1873 Mr. Viland died, leaving Mrs. Viland with three small children between the ages of two and eight years. Left thus to fight her own way and care for her family, she faced many trials, and her path was not always smooth; never theless she proved equal to the emergencies, and not only succeeded in providing for daily needs, but had to spare to those less fortunate than she.

Mrs. Viland was loving and affectionate mother, a good neighbor and was highly esteemed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held in the Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Huus; interment was in the Bethlehem cemetery. A large concourse of friends attended upon the last sad rites.
