Funeral Services Held at Collins for Earl W. Battles

Special to Journal
Collins, Nov. 18--Funeral services for the late Earl W. Battles of Collins, who passed away Sunday night in the Mary Greeley hospital at Ames, after a few days illness from pneumonia, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Methodist church with the Rev. Ida I. Roberts, local pastor in charge. A double quartet consisting of Mrs. L. M. Hall, Mrs. G. C. Irish, Miss Calla Wood, Mrs. Ray Shugart, Supt. G. E. Holmes, E. S. Stuntz, J. R. Witmer and Dr. J. M. Smith with Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes at the piano, sang "No Disappointment In Heaven," "No Tears in Paradise," and "The Eastern Gate." The many beautiful floral offerings bore mute testimony to the high esteem in which he was held by his large circle of relatives and friends. They were cared for and arranged at the church and cemetery by Mrs. Ora Hanson and Mrs. Sam Hyatt. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery and the pallbearers were cousins of the deceased, Harold, Gerald, Kenneth, Finley, Charles and Leland Battles.

The following obituary was read at the services by the pastor.

Earl Woodward Battles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Battles of near Nevada, was born near Valeria, Polk county, Iowa, April 11, 1912 and passed away in the Mary Greeley hospital at Ames, Sunday evening Nov 13, 1938, aged 26 years, 7 months and 2 days.

In 1929 Earl moved with hie parents to the Collins community and continued to live near or in Collins until the time of his death.

On May 29, 1933 he was united in marriage to Miss Orpha Renfeldt. To this union were born three children Arthur, Joan and Marilyn. Earl was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, a willing worker and a loyal friend. His quiet, unassuming ways and his kindly smile will be greatly missed.

Besides his parents, wife, children and many other relatives and friends he leaves three brothers LeRoy of Collins, Raymond and Asa at home; one sister, Mrs. Betty Johnstone of Collins and three half brothers--Peter, Paul and Dick Battles. His twin brother died in infancy. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to those who loved Earl most because they knew him best.

The services were largely attended, the church being filled to capacity and many forced to stand within and without the building. A large group of relatives and friends coming from the vicinity of Bondurant, Valeria and Mingo.
