Funeral Services Held at Zearing for Popular Boy

Special to the Journal:
Zearing, Aug. 28--Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church in Zearing Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Robert W. Chance, 18, who passed away Aug. 22.

The church was filled beyond capacity with sympathizing relatives and friends. A large number were accommodated on the church parsonage lawns, hearing the service by an amplifier.

Classmates of the deceased attended in a group to pay their last respects to an esteemed friend.

Rev. George Manning of the Church of Christ officiated, assisted by Rev. R. E. Kerney of the Evangelical church.

The music was furnished by Frederick Smith, Gordon Lundy, William McBride and LeRoy Kerney in a quartet arrangement. They were accompanied at the piano by Miss Audrey Wolford.

Frederick Smith sang a vocal solo, "O Saviour Hear Me," by Gluck.

The many beautiful flowers were arranged and cared for by Mrs. Winifred Schultz, Mrs. George Herr, Miss Mildred Clatterbuck and Miss Helen Jones.

The pallbearers who were class mates of the deceased, were Kenneth Comfort, Marvin Golley, William Britten, Edwin Fink, Fred Bissell, Vern Perisho, Charles Whitaker, Dayle Reee and Lawrence Kadolph.

Interment was in the Zearing cemetery. Relatives from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Chance of Liscomb; Lon Chance and a son, Clay, of Galt; Meda Kersey of Galt; Mrs. Grace Rollings and daughter, Mrs. Clayton Childs of Lake Crystal, Minn.

Mr. and Mrs. Wylie Thornton, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Knight, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ruddick and son Lyle, Mr. and Mrs. Art Rash, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rash, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Young, Otis Rash, Mrs. Jennie Rash, Mrs. Rosa Rash and Mrs. Ethel Faris, all of New Providence.

Marian Wood, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Howard, Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rash and sons David and Joseph, of Whitten; Mr. and Mrs. Morris Wooten, Clemons; Mrs. Dora Warrington and Alvin Thornton, of State Center; Mrs. Inez Floyd, LeGrand; Mrs. Lilly Thayer, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Thornton of Iowa Falls.

Obituary

Robert William Chance, the only son of Steve F. and Ruth Chance, was born near Zearing on May 26, 1922. Robert grew to young manhood in this community where he exhibited merit in high school.

He participated in glee club, class plays and track. In his junior year he was awarded the trip to Hawkeye Boys' State at Camp Dodge, which was granted upon the basis of citizenship, personality and promise of usefulness to the community. Thus at an early age Robert showed a great promise of becoming a leader and worthy citizen of community. Robert attended the Church of Christ where he served as Sunday school treasurer for two years.

Since his graduation from high school in 1939, Robert has assisted in operating the family farm. Here he had accepted responsibility and labored until the week of his death, which occurred near Marengo as he was being taken to Iowa City for medical attention His death on August 22, 1940 was caused by acute lymphatic lukemia.

Robert was a friend to all who knew him. He head the unusual ability of enjoying life in a clean manner and at the same time being sincere and responsible. He leaves to mourn his passing, not only his parents and relatives, but a host of friends, both old and young.
