Funeral Services Held Wednesday for Mrs. Alfreda Hurst
Maxwell, March 24 -- Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. D. Brower of the Brethren church in Maxwell, were held for Mrs. Alfreda Hurst widow of the late Hiram Hurst at the Methodist church at Farrar on Wednesday, March 19 at 2:00 p. m., and burial was in the Farrar cemetery. Three songs, "Ivory Palaces," "In the Garden," and "Abide With Me," were sung by Mrs. A S. Tomlinson and Mrs. Iona Dykstra accompanied by Mrs. Doris Norton, Roy Davey, Harry Hill, Art Poorbaugh and A. S. Gifford.
The floral offering were most beautiful.
The following obituary was read:
Alfreda Poorbaugh, daughter of Henry and Phoebe Poorbaugh was born Oct. 3, 1860 near Colfax, Iowa, and departed this life on March 15, 1947 at her home in Maxwell at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 11 days.
Her girlhood was spent in the vicinity of Colfax. She was united in marriage with Hiram Hurst on July 20th 1879 at Greencastle. The surviving children of this union being Carl J. Hurst of Maxwell and Virgil B. Hurst of Alhambra, California. Two sons, Charles and Earl and a daughter, Edna, having preceded her in death. Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Dora Harris of Earlham, Iowa, Miss Harriet Poorbaugh of Long Beach, California and Mrs. Sam Failor, also of California, nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
After the death of her husband she moved from their home near Farrar, to Maxwell, where she ha since resided.
When a young woman she united with the Brethren Church and throughout her life she remained a firm believer in the Christian faith enjoying her bible more than any other book, having memorized large portions of it.
Relatives in attendance who were not local residents include: Mrs. Floyd James and Mr. and Mrs. Freemont Hadley of Earlham, John R. Hadley of Dexter, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Harrington, Mrs. Roy Goeke and Mrs. and Mrs. Morris Hickman of Newton, Mrs. Ray Van Riper and Mrs. Gail Fields of Colfax and Mr. and Mrs. Terry Wallace of Mason City. A son, Virgil Hust of Alhambra, California was unable to attend because of a recent illness from which he had not completely recovered.
