Last Rites for John Oyler Held Tuesday in Maxwell

Funeral services for John Oyler, 91 of Maxwell were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Christian church with Rev. Hugh Guy, of Nevada in charge.

A quartet composed of Jennie Kirk, Leota Scott, Arnold Scot and Dorus Myers sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Good Night and Good Morning," accompanied by Laura Pearson at the organ.

Flower offerings were beautifully cared for by Betty Porter and Stephen Cooper.

The pallbearers were grandsons, namely: Robert Oyler, John Oyler, Lowell Clayberg, Orville Sarsfield and Arthur Sarsfield.

The following obituary was read by Rev. Guy as part of the funeral service:

John, son of Hiram and Ellen Shaeffer Oyler, was born September 17, 1856, at Stoystown, Pa.

When he was about eight years of age, he came to Story county with the George Meese's, friends of the family, because he, a sister and two brothers had been left orphans at the end of the civil war. A brother, George, was killed during the war.

He lived on farms in the Collins, Nevada and Maxwell communities until 1916, when he moved to Maxwell.

on January 1, 1879, he was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Strickler and to this union were born ten children, two of whom, with his wife, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his passing eight children: Florence Clayberg, of Story City; Lou Schurtz of Des Moines; Cora Coughenour, of Collins; Jim, Mrs. Hannah Dolph, John Oyler Jr., Jessie Robertson and Marie White, all of Maxwell; 36 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and one brother, James, of Bedford, Ohio, besides a number nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

John enjoyed good health until he fell April 24 and fractured his hip. He was taken to the hospital, where he remained about three weeks. On May 20 he was brought home and departed this life on May 23 at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 6 days.
