Mrs. William Mead Services at Fernald

Fernald, June 4--Funeral services for the late Mrs. William mead were held in the Church of the Brethren Friday afternoon, preceded by brief prayers at the home and all conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J. A. Eby. Mrs. Mead had spent her entire life within a few miles of Fernald. Mrs. Ray Gooden of Maxwell sang, "There Are No Tears in Paradise." Other songs were sung by the choir.

The following obituary was read by the Rev. Eby:

"Winnie Ethel Fry was born Aug. 1, 1876, to George and Nancy Fry at Genasea Grove, Ill., and passed away at her home in Fernald, Iowa, May 27, 1947, at 7:40 a. m., age 70 years, nine months, and 26 days.

"With her parents she moved to Iowa when only six weeks of age. They settled in the Johnson Grove community where she grew to womanhood and was married to William Mead Dec. 25, 1892. They celebrated their golden wedding four years ago. To this union was born one daughter, Innie.

"Remaining to mourn her departure are her devoted husband, their daughter, Innie, Mrs. Guy Handsaker, and her husband, one grandson, Ronald Handsaker, and his wife, two great-grandsons, Richard and Billie Joe. There are three sisters, Millie, Mrs. Jud Stevens, Eva, Mrs. D. W. Wise and Lettie, Mrs. Dennis Handkins, besides a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

About fifty years ago she was baptized in the Church of the Brethren in which she has been a faithful member, never missing services where health permitted attendance.

"She was a most devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her thoughts were always for helping others. She has given her strength to the utmost in preparing food and garments for the needy abroad. Little children loved her. She was a lover of her home, her family and her church."

Relatives from a distance included: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schuler, Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Schuler, Mrs. Letty Mead, all of Welcome, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Kuhn, Mrs. Elsie Hubbard, of Winnebago, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. H. Engle, Mrs. Alfred Foot and daughter Jean, Mrs. Bernice Holverson, and son, all of Hawkeye, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Tisdale, of Manning, Mr. and Mrs. James Tisdale, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Donaldson, and three sons, all of Union; Mr. and Mrs. John Tisdale, of Zearing; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tisdale, of Lamoile.

There were others here from Mountain Grove, Mo., Prairie City, Minburn, Estherville, Hampton, Coggon, Iowa Falls, Boone, Maxwell, Ames, State Center, Colo and Collins.

Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery, near Johnson Grove church. Members of the bereaved family and out of town visitors are deeply grateful to the Brethren Ladies' Aid for food served, both noon and evening, in the Lee Dadisman home.
