Last Rites For M. J. Hegland In Minnesota

Funeral services for M. J. Heland, former Roland resident, who passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10 at his home in Roseau, Minn. were held at the English Lutheran church, in Roseau and largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends.

The following obituary appeared in the Roseau Times Region.

Martin John Hegland was born at Roland, Iowa June 28, 1878. He would ahve been 70 years of age at his next birthday. He completed his high school education in Roland and then attended Luther college in Decorah, Iowa graduating in 1900. He next attended the University of Minnesota graduating from the law school in 1903. Then followed a year a publisher of the Roland Record, Roland, Iowa. The following year here came to Pelan, Minn. where he had the Pelan Advocate and practiced law. The next move was to Greenbush where he opened a law office. In 1909 he moved to Roseau and set up the practice of law which he continued until his death.

He married Mrs. Josephine Bell, Dec. 28, 1905. To this union were born Miss Hazel Hegland, St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Maxine Lilian Hegland, Palo Alto, Calif., Mrs. W. K. (Helen) Bixby, St. Paul, and Lyle Marian Hegland, Bell, Calif. Mrs. Hegland died April 27, 1919. Mr. Hegland remarried on June 8, 1920, his bride being Miss Bertha Marie Olson of Roseau. To this union were born Miss Melva Jean Hegland, Martin Hegland, Mrs. Rudy (Carol) Meyer, Jacksonville, Fla. and Luther Hegland. Mrs. Hegland and the sons and daughters are living, as are five sisters in Iowa, and three grandchildren.

Wide Influence

Mr. Hegland interested himself in everything of interest to the community and county. He served as county attorney several terms was connected in organizing the various co-operatives in the community, local groups of non-commercial character, served as member of the School Board of Dist. 41 several terms, was connected with the Citizens State Bank as member of the Board, was serving as member of the Oakland Park Sanitarium Board on which he had worked many years, and was a member at the time of his death, and he served as mayor of Roseau Village several times. He was a member of the English Lutheran congregation from the time he and his family moved to Roseau. He organized the first Sunday school in the county, and served a few years as superintendent of the school. He was a member of the Masonic Order, holding 32nd degree in the organization.

There are very few activities in this community
that have not had the helping hand of Mr. Hegland. It is difficult to name any worthwhile activity without connecting his name with it. No favor was too small or too great for him to do. As an attorney he placed high in this district. His successful practice was a testimony to that tact.
