Funeral Services Held Friday for Will Gamble

Maxwell, Dec. 16--Funeral services for Will Gamble, 72, who passed away Wednesday morning in the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames, were held Friday afternoon, Dec. 12, in the Presbyterian church with his pastor, the Rev. G. H. Hulsebus, officiating.

Mrs. Ray Gooden and Mrs. C. I. Kirk sang "Good-morning Here and Good-night Up There" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," which Mrs. D. M. Cuff accompanist on the piano. Floral tributes were many and very beautiful, arranged and cared for by Mrs. O. F. Strombeck and Mrs. Ida Petersen.

Carrying the casket were nephews of the deceased, Van D. Gamble, Harold Gamble, Harold Tipton, Leon Golden, Elden Richardson and Oakley Ray. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery at Iowa Center.

The following brief obituary was read by Rev. Hulsebus.

William Marian Gamble, son of John D. and Elizabeth Gamble, was born February 25, 1875 on the family homestead near Maxwell, and passed away at the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames December 10, 1947.

Mr. Gamble was the youngest of a family of thirteen children of one of the oldest families of Story county. He is survived by his wife, and two sisters, Mrs. I. W. Douglass of Maxwell and Mrs. W. L. Tipton of Nevada.

He was united in marriage to Miss Rosa M. Ray on Nov. 19, 1902. They made their first home on the family homestead, where they lived for fifty-eight years. After selling out they moved to Maxwell where they continued to make their home until his death.

In early life Mr. Gamble became a Christian and united with the Presbyterian church of Maxwell, and except for the last ten years he was active in the church and community affairs. His illness and general poor health kept him from active participation in these affairs but his interest was continuous in church and community life.

He was deeply appreciative of every thoughtfulness and kindness shown him.

He was a devoted husband and a kind neighbor, and along with many relatives, a host of friends will greatly miss his passing, for man are the friends that a man makes in his life and they are the ones to whom death brings its stinging blow. God hath called our friend to his own even as he hath given life at the beginning.

Relatives from out of town attending the rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ray of Conrad; Mr. and Mrs. George Gamble and Mr. and Mrs. Oakley Ray of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Gamble of Omaha; Marvin Powers of Council Bluffs and his mother, Mrs. Blanch Powers, of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gamble, of Vinton; Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hopkins of Colo; Mr. and Mrs. Clair Fish of Collins, Mrs. W. L. Tipton and Harold Tipton of Nevada, Robert Ray of Grinnell, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ray, Mrs. Marjorie Lee, Mrs. Helen Ball and Donna Ray of Des Moines.
