Funeral Services Held Monday For John H. Thompson
Colo, May 28--The Calvary-United Brethren church of Colo was filled to capacity for the funeral services of John H. Thompson at 2:30 p. m. Monday, May 24. The services were in charge of Rev. Keith Orr of Reynolds, Ill., former Colo pastor, assisted by Rev. Alfred Schneck, pastor of the Methodist church.
Casket bearers were Kenneth Grant, Wayne Truesdell, Ralph McIntosh, James Croker, Kenneth Squires and Herbert Lambeth. The music was by Mrs. Alice Marsh, soloist, who rendered "Some time we'll understand," "Going down the valley" and "Shadows" Mrs. Mildred Brinkman accompanying.
The front of the church was banked with the many beautiful floral offering, which were cared for by Mrs. Mae Perry, Mrs. Shirley Bamford and Mrs. Margaret Donaldson.
The following obituary was read by the minister in charge:
John Henry Thompson, son of John Wellington and Sabina S. Thompson, was born at Jacksonville, Ill., on July 26, 1885 and passed away at Collins, Iowa on Wednesday, May 19, 1948 at the age of 62 years, 9 months and 23 days.
He came to Lee county, Iowa at the age of eight with his parents, where they resided for several years before coming to Story county, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Bessie Bruner on Dec. 31, 1906, and to this union five children were born, La Vaughn, Sadie, Alverdo, John and Doris Evelyn, the latter passing away in infancy.
He engaged in farming for number of years, being seven years on the Bailey farm north of Colo, for 17 1/2 years was custodian of the Colo schools, from which position he resigned in January 1947, since which time he and his wife have spent much of the time in California, and he engaged in carpenter work. On their return from California recently, they purchased a home in Collins, which they had planned to occupy in the near future. He had been in failing health for some time, but his sudden death was shock to the community.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, industrious, and faithful and devoted to whatever task he undertook. He was a member of the Calvary Evangelical church of Colo.
Surviving are his widow, two sons, Alverdo of Lomita, Calif, and John D. of Marshalltown, two daughters, Mrs. La Vaughn Smith of Colo and Mrs. Sadie Dobson of Collins, three grandchildren, Claudine, Connie Lou and John Clinton Thompson of Marshalltown, one brother, William F. of Nevada, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Taylor of Portsmouth, Virginia, also two aunts, Mrs. William Walch of Ontario, Canada, and Mrs. Lena Taylor of Springfield, Ill., four uncles, Thomas Thompson of Elmore, Minn., and Samuel A. William and James H. Thompson of Jacksonville, Ill., besides many other relatives. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward in infancy, and Louis, who passed away January 14, 1948 at Oldham, S. D.
He was highly respected in the community of which he had so long been a member, and a host of friends mourn his passing, particularly the many, who as children, passed through the Colo schools during his long tenure of service there, and to whom he had endeared himself by many attentions and acts of kindness.

W. Bruner and Ronald Bruner of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Marvin Fernald of Winthrop, Iowa, Mrs. Nathan Reed of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Betty Popham of Lamont, Iowa, Mr. G. B. Geer of Shenandoah, Iowa, Mrs. Peter Ulbinsky of Coin, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. John Upchurch and children, Mr. and Mrs Frank Settle and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Kleinschmidt of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Severeid and son of Ocean Park, Calif., Mrs. Wallace Piper of Ames, and Belva, Ada and Iva Swalwell of Collins.
