Hold Military Rites For Pfc. Asa Battles

Miliary services were held for Pfc. Asa Battles Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Collins Methodist church with Rev. Aldreth Weigel officiating.

Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Mary Tomlinson, Mrs. Ivan Mullihan, Norman Patridge and Milton Hale, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. C. R. Stone.

Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Ora Hanson and Mrs. J. R. Armstrong.

Interment was in Collins Evergreen cemetery with Alvin Tiffany, Henry Tiffany, John Tiffany, Harold Hale, Wayne Laughlin and William Atwood as pallbearers.

Impressive graveside rites were by Freland-Carver Post, No. 81, American Legion of Collins.

Service men taking part in services included Forrest Pointer post commander; Wm. E. Stoneberg and Jack Fertig -- color bearers; Charles Kimberley and Harold Kimberley -- color guards; Floyd Oswat chaplain; Stanley Mitchell past commander; John Tiffany -- first vice commander; Wayne Laughlin -- adjutant; firing squad, John Kingman, commander, Dean Partridge, Howard Pitcher, Wm. Noring, Jack Stratton, Chester Lillard and Dale Deal.

Obituary

Asa Hiram Battles, son of Delmar and May Battles, was born July 2, 1922, in Jasper county, Iowa and departed this life in active service for his country in Germany, December 5, 1944, at the age of 22 years, five months and three days. Temporary burial was in Holland.

He was married to Marilyn Vincent and to this union one son, Gerald, was born, who is now four years old. One brother preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, beside his wife and son, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Battles of Collins; one sister, Mrs. Betty Johnson of Florence, Ariz.; two brothers, Raymond D. of Hawthorne, Calif., and Josh L. of Ames; and a host of relatives and friends.

Relatives and friends attending services were from Ames, Mingo, Colfax, Minneapolis, Minn., Maxwell and Colo.
