Military Services For Pfc. Owen Newgaard

Full military services for Pfc. Owen M. Newgaard were held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m. form the Lutheran church in Nevada, in charge, assisted by Rev. Buland of Cambridge by Rev. Ernest Windman, pastor of the Lutheran church in Nevada, in charge, assisted by Rev. Peter Buland of Cambridge.

Eleuan Sheldahl sang two hymns "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me," and Mrs. Edward Larson sang "In the Cross of Christ I Glory." They were accompanied by Mrs Elsie Webb at the piano.

The floral tributes were many and beautiful

The pall bearers were three soldiers and three sailors of World War II, LaVern Jennings, James Fish, Marvin Westvold, Dale Muson, Junior McHone and John O'Mara.

Following the services were exemplified by the large number of ex-soldiers, sailors and marines and friends present at the service.

Obituary

Pfc. Owen Morrell Newgaard was born August 20, 1925, to August and Pauline Newgaard on a farm west of Roland, Iowa. He was baptized in a country church, northeast of Roland, and was confirmed in the Cambridge Lutheran church. Moving with his parents to Shipley, he started his first year of school, also attending grade school in Slater and Huxley and entered the Cambridge school in 1937, from where he graduated in 1943. He was interested in Boy Scout work and took an active part in it while living in Cambridge.

He entered service on October 10, 1943, and was transferred to the enlisted reserve corp on the same date and reported for active duty Nov. 6, 1943, at Camp Dodge.

He left United States for foreign service June 2, 1944, and served in the United Kingdom, France and Germany, participating in the campaign of northern France and the Rhineland and was killed in action on March 2, 1945, in Kairfield, Germany, while serving as a Private First Class, Company B 71st Tank Battalion.

Survivors

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Pauline Newgaard of Stover, Mo.; one brother, Eugene at home; four sisters, Mrs. Odellia Lantz of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Arlett McKee and Mrs. Helen Wells of Des Moines and Evelyn at home, four nephews, Monte, Gary Alan and Nere Lantz, and a host of relatives and friends. His father and one sister preceded him in death.
