Hold Final Services For Sakaraias Torsdahl

A short prayer service was held at the Henderson Funeral home in Story City recently for Sakarias Torsdahl with Rev. O. C. Hellekson of Huxley in charge. Mrs. J. L. Charlson of Ames, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden," accompanied by Mrs. C. Y. Vilmont of Ames.

Memorial services were held at the Fjeldberg Lutheran church in Huxley with Rev. Helleckson delivering the sermon.

Mrs. Otto Hanson of Roland sang "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name" and in the Norwegian language "Den Store Hvide Flok," accompanied by Mrs. Hanson at the organ. Mrs. Orland Fjelland was the organist for the rest of the service.

The pall bearers were Walter, Clarence and Fred Berhow, Arnold Sydnes, Kermit Freeland and Henry Elm.

There were many floral contributions and gifts to missions and children's homes in his memory.

Burial was in the family lot in the Palestine cemetery near Huxley.

Obituary

Sakarias Torsdahl was born February 27, 1867, in Torsdahl-Vats, Norway, son of Sakarias and Anna Torsdahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Nedre-Vats, Norway.

In 1890 he came to America and settled in the Huxley vicinity.

On December 10, 1896, he was united in marriage to Maria Lowe in Cambridge. Two sons were born to them, one of whom died in infancy. His wife died in 1904.

He was married to Bertha Berhow on Dec. 29, 1909 at Huxley. Two daughters were born to this union.

He joined the Fjeldberg church in Huxley, where he retained membership till his death. In 1913 he moved from Huxley to a farm, northeast of town, where he lived until his retirement in 1933, moving back to Huxley. In 1945 he moved to Story City and suffered a cerebral stroke on Sept. 12, 1948, while attending services at St. Petri church in Story City. After seemingly recovering from his illness after a six-week recuperation period, but was again taken ill Oct. 26, and failed daily until his death at 3:30 a.m., Oct 31, at the age of 78 years, eight months and four days.

With him at his bedside at the time of his death were his wife and family and a brother-in-law, Thomas Berhow, of Eagle Grove.

Survivors

Surviving are his wife, Bertha; one son, Arthur of San Francisco, Calif., who was unable to be here; two daughters, Mrs. H. E. Larson (Bernice) of Ames and Mrs. W. L. Halterman (Marie) of Story City; three grandchildren, Lorraine and Dallas Torsdahl of San Francisco and Avery Halterman of Story city; three sisters, Mrs. J. R. Sydnes of Slater and two in Norway; four brothers, Carl of Skyberg, Minn., and three in Norway, and a great number of relatives and friends.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be a long sorely missed by his bereaved family.

Those attending last rites from a distance were Carl Tesdahl, Skybery, Minn., Magnus Langland, Kenyong, Minn., Mrs. Elsie Berhow, Mrs. Peter Goven and Justin Berhow, Elmore, Inn., Edgar Berhow of Northfield, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Sven Torsdahl and Thomas of Eagle Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Severin Lowe, Forest City; Mr. and Mrs. Hoghin and Mrs. and Mrs. Harley Berhow of Manly, and many relatives and friends from Nevada, Cambridge, Ankeny, Slater and Ames.
