Hold Final Rites For Norman F. Hitchcock

Funeral services for Norman Hitchcock, 22 year old veteran of World War II, were held in the White Oak church Thursday afternoon, Dec. 30, at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Mark Wetteland and Rev. Donald Jones of Cambridge.

Eyleen Bond sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "The Holy City" and "In My Father's House Are Many Mansions" with Mrs. Howard McCauley at the piano.

There were many gifts of money by relatives and friends to missions and church organizations in memory of the deceased.

Casket bearers were Harold McHone, Ronald Whitney, Wendell Whitney, Harold Howard, Cleo Cory and Hollis Scott. Interment was in the White Oak cemetery.

Obituary

Norman Francis Hitchcock, oldest son of Orval and Nelle Hitchcock, was born in Polk county on Feb. 9, 1926. He attended White Oak and Elhart schools, where he graduated in May, 1943. He grew to manhood in this locality and was baptized at infancy and was a member of the White Oak church.

Norman enlisted in the service of his country on Feb. 5, 1944, and received his Navy boot-training at Farragut, Idaho. He received his basic engineering at Gulf Port, Miss., and was later transferred to Little Creek, Va., where he received amphibious training. From there he was transferred to San Diego, Calif., where he left for the South Pacific. He returned from the Pacific theatre of operations on Dec. 29, 1945 and was united in marriage to Ruth Jeanne Carpenter at the White Oak church on March 24, 1946. To this union was one daughter, Diane Marie, age two years.

The deceased was released from the Navy on June 6, 1946, at St. Paul, Minn. He was engaged in farming for one year, following his release from the service.

Illness, which was the result of an injury received in the Navy confined him to his home for rest until the time of his death, Dec. 27, 1948, having reached the age of 22 years, 10 months and 18 days.

Survivors

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, one daughter, Diana Marie, one brother, Raymond, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Hitchcock, his grandmother, Mrs. Knute Nelson; and other relatives and a host of friends.
