Hold Final Rites For Oscar Larson

Funeral services for Oscar Larson, member of one of the pioneer families of this community were held on Monday. Mr. Larson passed away at Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines on Feb. 17 following a minor surgical operation after which complication developed resulting in his death.

Following a brief devotional service at the farm home the services were held at 2 p.m. at Palestine church in Huxley, with the Rev. H. E. Jacobson in charge, assisted by Pastors Peder Buland, and Nels Flugum, a brother-in-law of the deceased.

Walter Christopher sang one of Mr. Larson's favorite hymns in the Norwegian language, "Den Store Hvide Flok." Mrs. Selmer Westvold, and Mrs. Osmund Larson Jr. sang two duets: "In the Garden" and "Nearer My God to Thee," with De Wayne Wee, church organist at the console.

Memorial gifts amounting to $181 were given to various missions and benevolences. Pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased, Seward, Lawrence and Osmund Larson, Jr., Phillip Flugum, Noel Larson and Edward Larson. Interment was made in the family plot in Palestine cemetery, Riis of Slater in charge.

Obituary

Oscar Larson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Larson was born March 23, 1879, on the Larson homestead in Polk county, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed by the late Rev. H. C. Holm and was a lifelong member of Palestine church. He reached the age of 69 years, 10 months and 22 days.

He attended the public schools and later enrolled at Jewell Lutheran college and further continued a course of business at the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines. Later he returned to his farm and continued farming until two years ago when he and his wife moved to their new home in Ames.

On Dec. 23, 1913 he was united in marriage to Miss Helga Sabo of Nevada, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Lester and Rudolph.

On January 30 this year he entered Iowa Lutheran hospital for observation and medical treatment which led to a minor operation. From this he was hell on his way to recovery when a kidney infection developed. On Monday he went into a coma from which he never regained consciousness.

He was a man of cheerful disposition and wore a radiant smile of cheer and good-will. In his daily living he practiced Christian principles and when the reality of death came to him he said: "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me."

Survivors

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Larson; two sisters, Anna and Mrs. H. L. Weeks of Kelley, and a grandson, John Lloyd Larson. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Helga and two sons, Lester of Cambridge and Rudolph of Huxley, and two grand children, Ruth Ann and Roger. He is also survived by four brothers, Osmund, Andrew, Lewis and Henry all of the Huxley community and all members of this congregation and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Flugum of Forest City, and Carrie of Des Moines and a host of relatives and friends.
