Final Services For Mrs. Martha Bates
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Bates were held Sunday afternoon, May 8, at the Collins Church of Christ with Rev. Henry Esch officiating. Burial was in the Collins Evergreen cemetery beside the husband.
Mrs. Hugh Fertig accompanied at the piano with Mrs. Kenneth Tomlinson and Mrs. Ivan Mullihan singing "The Lord is My Shepherd," solo, "God's Tomorrow," by Mrs. Tomlinson and at the closing of the services the duet sang "In the Garden."
Pall bearers were her grandsons, Delane, Russell and Howard Hand, Doyle Snyder, Richard Shope and Willard Johnston.
Obituary
Martha Rosella Stevens, daughter of Benjamin and Martha Stevens, was born near Collins, Iowa, January 1, 1870, and died at the Friendly Nursing home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 5, 1949, at the age of 79 years, five months and five days.
She was united in marriage to Walter Bates on Feb. 22, 1889, and eight children were born to this union. Mrs. Bates grew to womanhood in the Collins community and lived in it all her life, until almost three years ago, when she hold her home and went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to live with her daughter, Mrs. Blanche Johnstone.
She united with the Collins Church of Christ on Feb. 1, 1920, and was a faithful worker in the church until her death made it impossible for her to serve more.
Survivors
Surviving are the daughters Mrs. Blanche Johnstone and Mrs. Rose Shope of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Cecil Jones, San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Myrtle Hutchins, Washington, D. C., Mrs. Fay Hand, Mrs. Irene Snyder and one son, Floyd Bates of Collins. Also 24 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Captola Roush of Des Moines, one half-sister, Mrs. Bertha Scott of Collins and one half-brother, Charles Millhouse of Ramona, Oklahoma.
Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1917, and one daughter, Mrs. Fay Neese, passed away eight years ago.
Relatives attended the services from Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Milton, Fla., Virginia, Clemons and Maxwell.
