Hold Final Services For John Thornton

Graveside services were held fro John Thornton of Winterset on Friday morning in the Colo cemetery. The pastor of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Winterset was in charge of the impressive service at the grave.

Obituary

The following obituary was read preceding the sermon. John Thornton, son of John and Ann Thornton, was born at Bloomington, Wisc., August 23, 1863. He passed away at his home at Winterset, Iowa, May 4, at the age of 85 years.

He was marriage to Fannie Isola Lahommedieu on Sept. 27, 1892. She passed away on April 26, 1940. To this union were born three children Mary Estella of the home, who so patiently cared for her father, Elza, who preceded him in death at the age of 12, and Reuby John of Wichita, Kansas.

His early married life was spent at Colo, where he joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Sometime later he was ordained an Elder in the church and was faithful to the end.

In 1920 he moved to Diagonal, where he lived for 18 years, after which he moved to Winterset.

The last 17 years of his life was spent in a wheel chair. Regardless of his handicap he was very cheerful and patient and brought happiness to many friends.

Survivors

Surviving are his daughter, Mary Estella, his son, Reuby and two brothers, Will of Bloomington, Wisc., James of Colo, a sister, Agnes Handy of Mason City, other relatives and many friends.

A granddaughter, Betty, preceded him in death.

A dinner was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art Perry at one o'clock for those of the funeral cortege.
