Many Attend Services For Walter E. Brown
Last rites for Walter E. Brown were held Thursday, July 28, in the Collins Church of Christ with the Rev. Henry Esch officiating. The church was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives.
The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by two neighbors, Mrs. Forest Kitchen and Mrs. Gerald Gilley.
Mrs. Kenneth Tomlinson was soloist, singing two beautiful numbers, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Under His Wings". Mrs. A. L. Pitcher accompanied her at the piano.
Pall bearers were K. W. Tomlinson, C. E. Long, Raymond Long, Harve Southern, Claude Ballard and R. G. Patton.
Burial was in the Collins Evergreen cemetery.
Obituary
Walter E. Brown, son of Silas and Minerva Brown, was born on the Brown homestead, east of Collins, Sept. 12, 1885. He died very suddenly, July 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph Cory, near Elkhart.
He was married to Zella Mae Cooper, Jan. 29, 1909. To this union three children were born. They also raised and adopted two nieces, the children of his sister, Susan. His brother, Lee, also made his home with them for a number of years.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown lived on a farm, near Collins, until about 10 years ago. They moved to Collins where Mr. Brown operated a dray line and did work with a team and truck for practically everyone in the town.
He was a faithful member of the Collins Church of Christ, a member of the official board, holding the office of deacon. The deceased will be greatly missed by the business firms and householders of the Collins community, by his church and fellow officers, by his pastor and most of all by his family.
Survivors
Surviving are his wife, Zella; one son, Walter Fay of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; two daughters, Mildred Combs of Sun Valley, Calif., and Neva Cory of Elkhart; two nieces, Mrs. Ruth Brown Peterson and Mrs. Arlene Brown Rhoades; one sister, Iva; two brothers, Lloyd of Green Forest, Ark., and Lee of Collins, and 12 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends attended the services from Green Forest, Ark., Chippewa Falls, Wis., Des Moines, Webster City, Ames, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Nevada, Elkhart, Maxwell and other communities surrounding Collins.
