Hold Final Services For Axel M. Mason

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1, at 2 o'clock from the Lutheran church in Cambridge for Axel M. Mason, who passed away on Monday morning at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, where he had been taken Sunday afternoon.

He had been in poor health for several years, but liked to work at his trade as a jeweler, which profession he followed nearly 60 years.

Rev. Harry Stoutland, pastor of the Lutheran church, was in charge of the service.

Mrs. Leland Gardner and Mrs. Harry Cairns sang "Rock of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross", accompanied by Mrs. Elsie Webb at the piano.

The casket bearers were Arthur Mason of Des Moines, Donald Peterson of Fort Dodge, Herman Fjelland, Abner Bauge and Roger Fjelland of Huxley and Elden Bauge of Roland.

Obituary

Axwl M. Mason was born July 22, 1866, on the Mason homestead, one mile south of Cambridge, and passed away on Monday, Aug. 29, 1949, at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines at the age of 83 years, one month and seven days. His parents were Morris and Taletta Mason.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran church in Cambridge. At an early age of 12, he was assisting in the farm work.

In 1889 he opened a jewelry store in Cambridge and continued in that work until his death.

On Sept. 10, 1891, he was married to Cecelia Fjelland of Huxley. No children were born to this union, but a niece, Amelia Wenos, was brought up in their home at their own daughter from the age of eight until her death 10 years later.

Mr. Mason had been failing in health for a number of years, due to complication of illnesses. His death on Monday followed a heart attack of the previous evening.

Although his health was failing he would not give p hi watch repairing. Since the death of his wife in 1930, he has been alone, taking care of his home and business to the best of his ability.

He so often spoke of his many friends and how deeply he appreciated their many kindnesses to him.

Survivors

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Carrie Raynes of Ames; one half-sister, Mrs. Nellie Peterson of Slater; one half-brother, Clarence Mason of Cambridge, and a large number of relatives and friends.

Burial was in the Fjeldberg cemetery near Huxley.
