THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July 28, 1949, page 1, column 3. "TWO PROMINENT CITIZENS PASSED AWAY. - JOHN E. BOWEN - John E. Bowen, son of Jesse and Mary Ellen Will Bowen, was born at Iowa Center, Iowa on July 13, 1875,** where he was engaged in farming and the hardware business and for many years worked as a contractor and a carpenter. John E. Bowen and Anna Ruth John were united in marriage in Maxwell. Four daughters and two sons were born to that union. Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife and the following children: Maurice S. Bowen, B. Curtis Bowen, Mrs. Esther Curtis of Maxwell, Mrs. Ruth Hostetter, Mrs. Kathryn Anderson, of Ames, and Mrs. Helen Bohannon of Perry, Iowa. Also sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Glen a. Bowen of Maxell and three sisters, Mrs. Edna Keltz, Mrs. D. C. Elder and Ester R. Bowen of Marshalltown. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, July 24 at two o'clock from Cooper's Funeral Home, Rev. Deloss Marken, Chaplain of the Veteran's hospital , Des Moines was in charge of the services. Rev. Marken is an old friend of the family and a former resident of Maxwell. Organ music was played during the service. The floral offerings were a great many and beautiful. Those serving as pallbearers were T. J. Sparks, Clint Warfield, Glenn Scott, E. L. Wood, Dan Peters and Harley Minear. Interment was in the Maxwell cemetery. Many out of town friends of the family attended the service. And passed away at Maxwell, Iowa, on July 22, 1949, age 74 years. In 1882 he moved from Iowa Center to Maxwell with his parents. He received his early education in the Iowa Center and Maxwell schools. His entire life was spent in this community** " **Editorial note - typed as original newspaper article.
