Hold Final Services for Chas. J. Thomas
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 19, from the Cambridge United Brethren church for Charles J. Thomas, 82, who passed away Sunday afternoon, July 16, at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, where he had undergone surgery on July 3.
The services were in charge of Rev. Mark Wetteland, pastor of the Cambridge Methodist church. Graveside rites were in charge of the Cambridge Masonic lodge.
Robert Fausch of Alleman sang three hymns, "Beyond the Sunset," "Rock of Ages" and "Love of God," accompanied by Mrs. Paul Grosebeck of Cheyenne, Wyo., at the piano.
Mrs. Mathilda Hill and Mrs. Lawrence Gardner had charge of the flowers.
Casket bearers were five grandsons Charles, Leslie, Melvin Paul and Rex Tomlinson and Richard Boy. Interment was in the Cambridge cemetery.
Obituary
Charles James Thomas was born in Spartansburg, Ohio, on October 20, 1867, and passed away at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines on July 16, 1950, having reached the age of 82 years, eight months and 26 days.
Soon after his birth his parents, Absolom and Lucinda Thomas, moved to Indiana, where Charles spent his boyhood. At the age of 12 the family moved to Shelby county, Iowa.
His higher education was obtained at Highland Park college in Des Moines where he completed a course in pharmacy. He operated a drug store in Des Moines for two years and then established a drug store in Cambridge during the year of 1895.
On Aug. 9, 1896, he was united in marriage to Clara Fausch. To this union a daughter, Meda, and a son, Leslie, were born.
During his lifetime in Cambridge he was very active in all civic affairs. He was a member of the United Brethren church since 1920 and a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years.
In 1946 Mr. Thomas was honored by the Iowa State Pharmacy board by being presented a certificate for 50 years of membership in the Iowa State Pharmacy association.
Survivors
Surviving are his daughter, Meda Tomlinson of Cambridge, his son, Leslie Thomas of Shenandoah, two sisters, Mrs. Mae Sunderland of Harlan and Mrs. Lydia Grosebeck of Cheyenne, Wyo., seven children, and seven great grandchildren.
His wife, Clara, and a sister, Ruth Slates, preceded him in death.
Those attending the funeral services came from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming, Kansas and Iowa.
