MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 3, 1910, page 1. "OBITUARY - MRS. MELISSA BARTON - The community was shocked Thursday evening to learn of the death of Mrs. Robert Barton, which occurred at the home of her son, Charles, at Altoona, Thursday, February 24th. She left here last fall to spend the winter with her son so that she might have companions about her during the long winter months. The body was brought here and the funeral, which was largely attended, was held from the Presbyterian church, Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Ilsley. Interment being made in the Peoria cemetery. Melissa Scott was born in Rockford, Illinois, April 14, 1844, and died February 24, 1910, aged sixty-five years, ten months and ten days. She was married February 14, 1860, to Robert Barton and to this union three children were born, Charles, of Altoona, Iowa; Samuel, of Des Moines, and Hulda, who died in 1886, leaving two small children, whom Mrs. Barton cared for as her own until their death. Mr. and Mrs. Barton came to Iowa in 1863, locating in Mitchell county, where they lived until 1889, when they moved to Polk county, where Mr. Barton died April 20, 1892. A few years later she came to Maxwell and made this place her home until her death. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, of this place, and was a good, conscientious Christian woman, always ready and willing to do anything in her power for those in need of help. Besides the sons, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one sister are left to mourn her loss. The entire community feel that they have lost a friend and extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones."
