THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 18, 1898, page 4, column 4. "OBITUARY - Hazel Elsie Barton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Barton, was born in Rhodes, Marshall county, Iowa, February 26, 1893, and died of pneumonia in Maxwell, March 11, 1897, age 4 years, and 13 days. She had been sick for several days but was not considered in danger until near the last. She was a bright, winsome child, and as one looked upon her face, beautiful even in death. It recalled the words of the Savior, "Of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The younger members of the Junior League, of which Hazel, was a member, assisted in the service by singing, "When He cometh to make up His jewels." Among the beautiful flowers covering the little white casket lay the emblem of the league. On account of illness Mrs. Barton was unable to attend the services at the church. Friends gathered at the house and by request joined in singing a song which the little one had often sung, "Scatter seeds of kindness," after which prayer was offered by the pastor. Mr. and Mrs. Barton have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement."
