THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, December 18, 1902, page 7, column 4. "OBITUARY - Louisa C. John was born in Carroll, county, Ind., March 26, 1839 and died at her home in Maxwell December 12, 1902, aged sixty-three years, eight months and sixteen days. She moved to Iowa with her parents in 1853 and was united in marriage to James Bales, February 24, 1958, to this union was born four children two of whom, Clara and Edda died in infancy, the other two C. C. Bales, of Wintersett** and Mrs. Hattie Scott, who lives near this city, survive. Mr. Bales died April 20, 1887. Mrs. Bales comes from a very remarkable family she being the seventh born of eleven children and the first one to be called into the great beyond. S. W. John, of Davenport, who is more than fifty years old is the youngest one of the family. There were seven girls and four boys, two sisters reside at Topeka, Kansas, and one at Oregon City, Oregon, all the rest have lived in Iowa for the last half century. Mrs. Bales has been a long but patient sufferer and though her affliction has been exceedingly great she never murmured nor complained. Early in life she professed faith in Christ and united with the C. P. church in which relation she continued until her death and always lived a consistent christian life. Her career has been a commendable one and she has now gone to reap the reward of a well spent life. The funeral was conducted at the C. P. church, Sunday at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. Clay Bobbitt and assisted by Revs. O. F. Shaw and G. E. Roberts, and the remains were laid to rest in the Maxwell cemetery. A large concourse of friends gathered at the church to pay their last respects to one who was dear to the heart of all." **Editorial note - Winterset instead of Wintersett.

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, December 25, 1902, page 4. "Mrs. D. D. Bales and son, Vern, returned to their home in Winterset Friday. Mrs. Bales came up to attend the funeral of Mrs. L. C. Bales and Vern had been here for some time staying with her and clerking in Bennett & Fleming's store."
