OPSTWEDT DIES AT MASON CITY

Former Resident of This Place Passes Away at Mason City from Effects of an Operation for Appendicitis

Joseph Opstwedt, brother of Mrs. Annie Egeland of this place, passed away at the Lutheran hospital at Mason City on January 4, 1923. He had been failing in health this past year and on December 26 was taken ill with appendicitis and submitted to an operation on the 27th. He recovered very well from this operation and was getting along as well as could be expected until January 4, when he had to be operated on again. He continued getting worse and died within four hours of the second operation.

Joseph Opstwedt was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sjur Opstwedt, born on January 6, 1877, on the old Opstwedt farm two miles north of Roland, and died on January 4, 1923, thereby lacking but two days of being 46 years of age at the time of his death. His mother, Ingeborg, father Sjur, and two brothers and four sisters have preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death two sisters, Mrs. Annie Egeland of Roland and Mrs. T. H. Torkelson of Story City.

Funeral services were conducted from the Bergen Lutheran Church on Monday afternoon, January 8, with Rev. Sumstad speaking the words of comfort to the bereaved.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral of Joseph Opstwedt were: Sam Opstwedt of Hayfield, Minn.; Mrs. Helen Johnson and Mrs. Willie Anderson and daughters Ruby and Eve of Des Moines; Messrs. and Mesdames O. K. Helvig and Hans Torkelson, Messrs. Thor Nereim and Lyman Morgan, Mrs. Jane Kirkeby and Miss Severie Torkelson of Story City and Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Krohn of McCallsburg.
