Nevada man dies in seven vehicle crash north of Luther Wednesday

A Nevada man died and two others were injured in an accident involving five cars and two semi-trailer trucks on Iowa Highway 17 about one mile north of Luther in Boone county. The accident occurred about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

David Heintz, 37, was identified as the victim by Iowa Highway Patrol troopers. He was alone in his car.

According to authorities, visibility in the area at the time of the accident was reduced because of snow whipped by wind gusts estimated at 30 miles per hour.

The accident apparently occurred when a semi-trailer truck jackknifed. A Madrid police car driven by Officer Buck Berndt, 25, slowed near the jackknifed rig and was passed by another semi-trailer that skidded into the ditch.

Authorities said that at least one car slid into the rear of the police car during a chain collision involving four other cars.

William A. Zachar, 17, of rural Boone, a driver of one of cars, was reported in serious, but stable condition Wednesday night at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with injuries he suffered in the accident. The driver of another car, Richard Riggan, 50, of Orange City, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at a Boone Hospital before being released.
