Last Rites For Matt Mehlow, 65, Held Thursday

Last rites for Matt Mehlow, 65, longtime resident of Story county, whose death occurred in Belmond, Iowa, were held in the Presbyterian church in McCallsburg, Thursday afternoon with Rev. James D. Ransom officiating, assisted by Rev. C. E. Lookingbill.

The songs were by Mrs. F. E. Nail and Mrs. G. W. Mills with Miss Cleo Tett accompanying at the piano.

The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Earl Horton and Mrs. Walter Rasmusson.

Casket bearers were T. O. Haaland, Walter Rasmusson, R. J. Burnett, Francis Donaldson, Earl Hornton and John Helland. Interment was in the Clemons cemetery by the side of his first wife and daughter.

Obituary

Matt Mehlow, son of Mathis and Carolina Schlodder Mehlow was born in DrachHausen, Brandenberg province, Germany, October 21, 1884 and passed away at his home in Belmond, Iowa at 3:50 p. m., January 2, 1950 at the age of 65 years, two months and 12 days.

After finishing the grade school at the age of 14, he came to America in April 1898, coming first to Topeka, Kansas, where he made his home for a few years with his Uncle Fred Schlodder. He came to Iowa in August 1914, arriving first in Lee county where on February 15, 1916, he was united in marriage to Marie Koche at St. Anthony. The following year they moved to a farm southwest of Zearing, where he started farming for himself.

To this union was born five children: Ralph who died in infancy, Clarence who lives southeast of Zearing, Lucy Carolyn who passed away at the age of seven, Eugene who lives northeast of Nevada, and Edward at home. The wife and mother passed away, Nov. 23, 1937.

Matt was a faithful worker in the McCallsburg Presbyterian church for several years.

He left the farm in the spring of 1947 and on May 23, 1947 he was married to Seba Rahfeldt and made his home in Nevada until September 1, 1949 when they moved to Belmond, where he and Eugene Kadolph bought the former F & F Food Market.

On November 5, he was taken to the Belmond hospital where following examination and surgery it was discovered he was a sufferer of cancer. Since then everything possible had been done to give him comfort and relief.

Following his return home he had been a very patient sufferer, and all possible care that loving hand could do for him was done by his wife and children, and Mrs. Mehlow's sister Mrs. Ben Fickes of Detroit, Michigan.

Besides the above names sons, he is survived by three grandchildren, two brothers, Fred and Chris in Germany, one brother, William, recently moved to Nevada from McCallsburg, Henry at McCallsburg, and six step-children, Lee Rahfeldt at home, Frank Rahfeldt, Nevada, Mrs. Clyde Miller, Hubbard, Mrs. John Schaper, McCallsburg, Albert Rahfeldt, Jr., Lansing, Michigan and Mrs. Eugene Kadolph, Belmond and a host of friends and relatives both in Story and Marshall counties, and at Belmond, Iowa.

In Attendance

Relatives and friends from distance in attendance at the last rites were from Marshalltown, Fort Madison, Detroit and Lansing, Michigan, Hubbard, Nevada and Zearing.
