Last Rites For Wm. S. Van Gundy Held in Slater
Funeral services for Wm. S. Van Gundy, long time resident of Nevada, who passed away at the age of 92 years were held from the Methodist church in Slater at 2 p. m. Monday.
The funeral service was in charge of Rev. C. E. Lookingbill assisted by Rev. Martin of Slater. The singing furnished by Rev. Martin and his wife.
Committal was in the Slater cemetery.
The following brief obituary was read at the funeral service:
William Smith Van Gundy, son of an early pioneer settler, Elijah Van Gundy and his wife Mary Smith Van Gundy, was born Oct. 1, 1857, a few miles south of Galesburg, Illinois.
As young man he was one of the early settlers to come to Story county, Iowa, where his father took up a homestead southeast of Slater.
In June, 1883, Mr. Van Gundy was married to Pauline Rohney at the Slater Lutheran church. To this union were born seven children, Mary, Clara, Lennie, Emma, Goldie, Zaida and Ole.
Mary died in infancy, Emma and Lenna preceded him in death and Mrs. Van Gundy died October 22, 1938.
Wm. Van Gundy's death came suddenly, Friday evening, December 30 about 10:30 o'clock.
Surviving are Mrs. Clara Fudge of Nevada, Mrs. Goldie McConahy of Des Moines, Mrs. Zaida Davisson of San Diego, Calif. and O. M. Van Gundy of Louisville, Ky. He also leaves fifteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. All of his brothers and sister proceeded him in death.
At an early age he united with the Methodist church.
