O. L. McAuley Died at Home In Newton
Orr Leonidas McAuley, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McAuley, was born at Peoria, Iowa, May 1, 1861 and died Jan. 30, 1935, immediately following a heart attack. Although he had been in declining health for two years, his death came suddenly when he suffered a heart attack while conversing with his wife and a friend.
He was the only son in a family of six sisters only one of whom survives, Mrs. Emma Smith of Los Angeles, California. On June 14, 1899 he was married to Hattie M. Tice at her home in Mahaska county. She is left to mourn the passing of a faithful and devoted companion. He was converted when a boy and united with the Methodist church and has remained a consistent Christian ever since, living an exemplary honest life, a real friend and neighbor one whose integrity could be depended upon.
Thus we have lost a man of excellent character and one who was held in high esteem and the influence of his cultured humble Christian character was inestimable. He was a pleasing affable gentleman and well liked by all who knew him.
While living at Peoria he taught a Sunday school class of young men for several years.
At the age of twelve years he began working so as to earn enough money to buy his own clothes. After finishing at Peoria school he taught school and attended Penn college. Later he became a partner in the general merchandising business at Peoria with Albert Smith. After Mr. Smith's death he carried on the business alone for some time, and then entered into partnership with William Sheesley which business they continued for several years. After the firm dissolved and disposed of the business Mr. McAuley moved to Nevada where he lived until 1920 when he moved to Newton where he has since resided.
Funeral services were conducted from the home at one p. m. Saturday by Rev. Roger Winger assisted by Dr. Leslie B. Logan. Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.
