Funeral Services Held at Roland for Community's Oldest Resident

Roland, April 26--Funeral services were held at Bergen church Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Aase "Grandma" Hereim, Roland's oldest citizen, who died here earlier in the week.

The service was in charge of her long time pastor, Rev. M. O. Sumstad, assisted by her former pastor Rev. G. Smedal, now of Wyoming, Minn., and Rev. Amdalsrud of Roland. Burial was in the Roland cemetery by the side of her husband Andreas Hereim, who died in 1919.

Mrs. Aase Hereim was born in Sevde, Norway, April 30th, 1842. Her maiden name was Aase Orthun. She was married to Andreas Hereim in Norway and came to America in 1870. She and her husband came to Howard township and has lived in this community since.

Returning from the farm many years ago they moved to Roland, to the southeast part of town. Shortly after the death of her husband in 1919 she disposed of her home and has since made her home with her son, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Hereim. She was almost totally blind and has suffered a broken hip three times. At the time of death she had almost reached the age of ninety seven and was the oldest citizen of this community. She was the mother of four children, two sons Ole and Andrew and Julia (Mrs. Christ Hall) had preceded the mother in death and Thomas with whom she made her home. She also leaves nine grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Bergen's church and had been active in its affairs as long her health and strength would permit.

But little over a year ago Grandma Hereim was the eldest of six people living in the community who were over ninety years of age. Of these she is the fourth to pass away and two survivors of this distinguished sextette are Mikel Hegland, 94, and Mrs. Nels Nelson, 91.

Askel Skromme died March 14 last year at the age of 95 years. Mrs. Skromme died February 14 this year at the age of almost 94 years, Iver Johnson died less than a month later, March 8, at 93 years, and now Mrs. Hereim, the oldest of the group, at almost 97 years.
