Community Was Shocked Last Saturday Morning When The News Spread That Andrew Hereim Had Been Killed.

Andrew A. Hereim has been killed such was the terrible news that spread over the streets last Saturday morning shortly after nine o'clock, and people were at a loss to comprehend the terribleness of the news.

Mr. Hereim had been working at the elevator, owned by O. M. Amundsen, for several months and was at his usual tasks on Saturday morning. About nine o'clock he had evidently gone under the elevator proper to look after some spouting or machinery, when in some manner his sweater became entangled on the main drive shaft and in the twinkling of an eye had wound itself around and thrown Mr. Hereim around with it. To all appearances have been thrown backwards and his head and shoulders were drawn close to the shaft and his feet thrown away from the shafting, striking the heavy timbers and spouting through which the corn was being elevated.

The lower part of the body was thrown with such force against the timbers and boards that some of them were shattered, and his left leg was torn to shreds, pieces of which was picked up around the driveway. The bones of the right leg were broken in several places, as where the bones of the left arm. The body was bruised terribly, but the head and face did not show any marks that would indicate that it has been struck by anything.

Paul Flogstad was coming up the street when he heard the noise of the body striking the timbers and he together with Burt Britson, called B. H. Knudtson, who is also employed by Mr. Anenson, and they rushed down to locate the trouble. Upon turning off the electric current, and stopping the machinery, the horrible sight met their eyes. Dr. Snyder was called and examination show that Mr. Hereim had been dead for several minutes.

Andrew A. Hereim was born on the old Hereim Homestead 5 miles south of Roland on May 22, 1881, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew O. Hereim. On June 1, 1904, he was united to Miss Martha Danielson in wedlock, to which union three children, Ardis, John and Margaret, were born and who with their mother have suffered such a terrible blow. They continue to live on the farm until four years ago, when they moved to Roland. For nearly two years he was employed at the Farmers Co-Operative Co. elevator but for the past few months had been employed by Mr. Anenson.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his untimely death, his aged mother, Mrs. A. O. Hereim, his sister, Mrs. C. J. Hall, of this place, and brother, T. A. Hereim, of Belmond, and a large number of relatives and other friends. Another brother, Ole Hereim, was killed by a train at Nevada about twenty-four years ago.

The funeral services were held from Bergen Church Tuesday afternoon and it was one of the largest if not the largest funeral ever held in Roland. Rev. M. O. Sumstad preached the funeral sermon. A profusion of wreaths, sprays and other floral offerings covered the coffin, the friends thus in a small measure testifying to their high regard for the dead and his sorrowing ones. Interment took place in the Roland Cemetery.
