Funeral Services For Jesse Brown In Colo Monday

Colo, July 12 -- Funeral services for Jesse J. Brown were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. Alfred Schneck, pastor, in charge.

Mrs. Curtis Marsh sang a solo with Mrs. Mildred Brinkman as pianist. The many beautiful flowers were cared for and arranged by Mrs. George Rae and Mrs. Cora Bales.

Casket bearers were Walter Mains, Roy Brouhard, Clyde Templeman, Charles Fleming, Roy Carver and Charles Reed.

Jesse James Brown was born September 1, 1876, near Cambridge, Iowa. His parents, William and Nancy, reared a family of eight, five boys and three girls. One brother and one sister preceded Mr. Brown in death.

His early life was spent on his parent's farm where he acquired the characteristics for which he was well known; his art in knowing and getting along with people, his diligence at his work, his perserverance and honesty and his keen interest in all about him.

His schooling was meager, but he had a definite knowledge of the world, learned from every day work and experiences.

On October 10, 1889, he was united in marriage with Emma Dolph at her parent's home south of town. To this union was born a family of six. One daughter, Aletha, died at birth; the five sons, Wayne, Lowell, Merle, LeRoy and Lionel survive. Merle lives in Davenport, the other four sons reside in California. All of the boys but Wayne arrived to comfort their mother.

Except a brief period of their married life, the Browns lived in Colo. They have occupied their present home for the past 41 years. To keep this home, Mr. Brown worked as a drainage contractor and town marshal. Of late years, until his health failed, he was a familiar figure to and from the depot and post office with his mail sack. Even after this work became an effort, Mr. Brown was faithful.

One of his chief interests was in his family and home. He took great pride in the doings of his sons, and exceptional joy in his nine grandchildren.

Not only does his sudden departure grieve his home folks, it also grieves a host of neighbors and friends. The memory of Jesse Brown will be ever present.

Relatives and friends from a distance were the following: George and Harlan Dolph, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dolph, Laura Bell Dolph, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Brown, Hazel Harmel of Nevada, Dick Christian, Roland, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dolph, Churdan, Mrs. Helen Frazier and daughter, Scranton, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brown, Bernice Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Carney, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cummings of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown, Emmetsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cummings, Maxwell; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Edward, Perry; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Flannigan, of Cedar Falls; Hanna Dolph, Maxwell; Harry Farris, Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Brown of Maxwell.

The sons, Dr. Merle Brown and family of Davenport; Roy and Lowell Brown of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Lionel Brown of Westminister, Calif.

The three sons from California were unable to reach Colo in time for the services because of car trouble, while in Nebraska. Interment services in the Colo cemetery were held Monday evening following the arrival of the sons.
