Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Reverend Doctor Raymond G. Hampton
July 15, 1941 - November 29, 2019

The Rev. Dr. Raymond G. Hampton was born on July 15, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Ethel (Hawkins) Hampton. He passed away peacefully on November 29, 2019 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa.

Ray grew up in Bensenville, Illinois, graduating from Fenton High School in 1959.

From there his formal education included graduating from Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton College and Fuller Theological Seminary. In 1991 he completed his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew University. A humble man who valued education, he preferred “Ray” to the title of The Reverend Doctor.

On June 1, 1968 Ray was united in marriage to Rhonda Joy Hammer of Pocahontas, Iowa. To this union were born 4 daughters: Joy (Rev. Chad Lierman), Ida Grove, Iowa; Susan (Roger Parker), Story City, Iowa; Mary (Lee Rainwater), Versailles, Kentucky; and Krista (Chris Taylor), of North Africa. Ray is also survived by grandchildren Colin, Daniel (Zoey), Leah (Stephen), Rebecca, Pressly, Carson, Lindsay, Ashley (Johnny), Caleb, Samuel, Shyanne, Bryna, Cayle, Jaydon, Anyka, Mayah, and Raymond; three great-granddaughters, Gwen, Raelyn and Novella; and one brother, Gerald, of Hampton, Ga., three nephews and many more extended family and friends. His parents and one niece, Laurel, preceded him in death.

Ray was a member of the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for 41 years. His pastorates included United Methodist Churches in Estherville (’67-’68), Sergeant Bluff and Salix (’68-‘76), Eldridge (‘76-‘83), Alden and Popejoy (’83-’87), Story City Grace (’87-’95), Albia Trinity (’95-2002), and Cherokee St. Paul (’02-’07). Ray retired from formal ministry in 2007, and he and Rhonda moved back to Story City.

In his retirement Ray enjoyed travel, playing the organ for worship at Grace Church and spending time with family and friends. His faith in God and in salvation through Jesus Christ guided him both in his ministry and in a life of service to others.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.

Blessed be the life and memory of Raymond Hampton.
