Clark Apple County Pioneer Died Here Today

Clark Apple, 81, native of Story county, died at Iowa sanitarium today at 9:20, following a major abdominal operation on Tuesday morning.

Mr. Apple had been failing in health for some time and an examination the first of the week revealed that his condition was such that an operation was advisable.

Mr. Apple had made his home for the past few years with his daughter, Mrs. Corilla Booher and family at 907 Lincoln avenue.

For the past twenty years or more he had conducted a shoe repair shop in Nevada, but late in the fall disposed of his business and retired from active work of any kind.

Mr. Apple was at the time of his death probably one of the oldest native sons of the county and had lived a great deal of his life in the county.

He was born, a son of Elias W. and Hannah Judd Dunning Apple at White Oak Grove south of Cambridge, May 25, 1857. When a child of but a few days the family returned to Noblesville, Indiana, where they remained a few months and then came back to Story county, settling in the Johnson Grove neighborhood. Here he was raised and attended the rural schools and was married January 9, 1877, to Corilla Hyden, daughter of a pioneer family.

Six children were born to this union, five of whom survive the parents. They were Grace Hamilton now of Port Angeles, Washington, Robert Apple of Arnett, Oklahoma, Marcellus U. Apple of Nevada, William Valentine Apple who died when a small child, Geo. Apple of Batavia, Illinois, and Corilla Booher of Nevada. A niece of Mrs. Apple, now Hazel Hopper of near Fernald was raised in the home as a daughter. Mrs. Apple died June 4, 1928.

He was married the second time to Mrs. Elizabeth Wall, this being on January 25, 1932. This wife died June 6, 1933.

Besides the five children, he leaves several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren as well as one brother Leslie Apple, whose home is at Clarksville.

During the earlier years of their life, Mr. and Mrs. Apple farmed in the neighborhood of where Fernald now stands. Leaving the farm they moved to Des Moines where he served for several years on the fire department and later conducted a wood working shop. After 11 years they returned to Story county and located on a farm they owned in Nevada township, and there they remained until moving into Nevada in 1917, when he established a shoe repair business, which he continued to operate until September of last year. Their home was then established at 907 Lincoln avenue, where it has since continued.

Mr. Apple was a man of very fine characteristics. He was devoted to his home and his family, was industrious and energetic and his honesty and integrity were never questioned.

His death will be deeply mourned not only by members of his family and near neighbors and friends, but by a wide circle of acquaintances gained during his long residence in the county.

Funeral arrangements await word from the children at a distance.
