Last Rites for Story City Man Saturday Afternoon

Story City, July 31 -- Funeral services for Mr. John Haugen, who died of a heart attack in Story City, Wednesday morning, July 24, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 17 days were held Saturday in Story City.

Mr. Hougen was born September 7, 1869, on a farm in Benton county near the town of Norway, Iowa. His parents were Jens and Christena Hougen.

In 1893 Mr. Hougen moved to a farm southwest of McCallsburg where he resided until 1910.

On March 9, 1893 he was united in marriage to Bertha E. Ellingson of Norway, Iowa. To this union eight children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Surviving Mr. Hougen are his wife and five children: Mabel (Mrs. August Groth) of St. Ansgar; Esther (Mrs. Herbert Paulson) of Ames; Ernest of McCallsburg, Byron of Cedar Rapids and Lillian at home; six grandchildren, Keith, Donald, Doris Ann, Ruby and Wayne Paulson of Ames, Philip Hougen of Cedar Rapids.

Brothers and sisters: Mrs. Marie Mathiason, Perley, Minn.; Miss Anna J. Hougen, Sunset Home, Story City, Ole C. Hougen, McCallsburg, Miss Martha Hougen, Vinton, Julius Hougen, Ames.

Also many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Hougen has been a life long member of the Lutheran church being baptized and confirmed in the church north of Norway, Iowa. He later transferred his membership to the McCallsburg Lutheran church and since residing in Story City has been a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran church.

Mr. and Mrs. Hougen moved to their present home in Story City in 1910 where they have lived since. During his residence in Story City Mr. Hougen was a livestock buyer and manager of the Farmers Cooperative Shipping Association until his retirement in 1932.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Immanuel Lutheran church in Story City, preceded by a prayer service in the home, Rev. Samuel Carlsen officiating.

Burial was in the cemetery in McCallburg.
