From Fredregill Family Funeral Home obituary, Collins and Zearing, Story County, Iowa:

Margaret Mary (Baumhover) Hyland, 95, of Zearing, IA passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2019 at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada, IA, surrounded by family.

Margaret was the fourth of seven children born to Anthony and Josephine (Kanne) Baumhover on September 3, 1924 on a farm outside of Carroll, Iowa. Her father died when she was 12 years old and she was chosen to stay home a year from school to help her mother with the house and her younger siblings. While in middle school, she earned a trip to Des Moines as the Carroll County representative in the state spelling bee contest in Des Moines. She was a graduate of St. Angela's Academy (an all-girls high school at the time) in Carroll and went on to work as the secretary-treasurer of the local agricultural adjustment agency. She married Mylo Hyland from Churdan, IA on January 27, 1947. Initially living and working in Carroll, Mylo and Margaret became farmers in Varina, Laurens, Dana and Fonda, Iowa before moving to Zearing in 1963 when Mylo took a job with Farmbest in Colo, IA.

In 1974, Mylo and Margaret opened Hyland Shoe Repair in Ames, IA, where they worked side-by-side in the small shop. Margaret specialized on the patching machine, replaced zippers, repaired leather jackets and various other odd requests. After Mylo retired and sold the shop to his son-in-law, Margaret continued to work there until 2002.

Margaret was a superb seamstress and showed infinite patience while teaching her 5 daughters to sew and having them share one sewing machine. In addition to spending time with her family, Margaret enjoyed music, having played the piano and violin; reading; crossword puzzles; jigsaw puzzles; following college sports and rooting for her beloved Chicago Cubs. She was pleasantly surprised to witness the Cubs win a World Series in her lifetime! Margaret and Mylo enjoyed playing bridge with other couples and Margaret continued playing with friends after Mylo's death. They also enjoyed dancing and frequented various dance halls on many a Saturday night. In her later years, Margaret traveled and took up quilting, donating many quilts to local communities. She was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing for over 55 years. She was kind, giving, selfless and always put her family before herself.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are her children Steve Hyland, Walnut Creek, CA; Sheila (Doug) Johnson, Webster City, IA; Nancy Reis, Des Moines, IA; Maureen (Gordon) Hyland-Carver, Ames, IA; Diane (Steven) Jones, Las Cruces, NM; Tim Hyland, Warsaw, Poland; Lisa (Bruce) Smallwood, DeForest, WI; Dennis (Juli) Hyland, Elk River, MN; Chris (Lisa) Hyland, Walla Walla, WA; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth (Baumhover) Ormondroyd and Rita (Baumhover) Prenger; brother Richard Baumhover and sister-in-law Mary Baumhover; brother-in-law Elmer (Leola) Simons; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mylo, brothers Denis Baumhover and Alfred Baumhover, sister Leola (Elmer) Simons, sister-in-law Florence (Alfred) Baumhover, brother-in-law Louis (Rita) Prenger and son-in-law Ted (Nancy) Reis.

We would like to thank the many people who cared for our mother over the past 5 years from the Zearing Health Care Center and Rolling Green Village as well as Suncrest Hospice. Their love and care were very much appreciated.
