David "Gus" Bruce Gostele
August 11, 1949 - October 18, 2019“The Journey is the Destination”
My journey started on August 11, 1949 when I was born to my parents, Frank Carol and Eileen Lucille (Halvorsen) Gostele in Elgin, Illinois. I was the second son of four boys. Being number two, I tried harder, just like Avis.
I had a loving, stable, and enjoyable childhood. My parents were always supportive and kept me actively involved (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, school sports, and just doing things with friends). Also, I learned how to work starting with my first job at Krogers Grocery as well as two newspaper routes, lawn mowing, snow shoveling, and various odd jobs. I attended the U-46 schools in Elgin, and in 1967, I graduated from Elgin High School.
After high school, my next stop was Des Moines, Iowa, to attend Drake University. Being influenced by many wonderful teachers, I followed a teacher preparation course of study. In 1971, I graduated with a B.S. in Secondary Education. From there, I entered a program called Teacher Corps. It provided me with an opportunity to get my Master’s degree and to spend a year intern teaching in Ames, Iowa. In 1972, I graduated from Drake with a M.S. degree in elementary education.
The next part of my travels was my marriage to Carol Ninow, who I met at Drake, and a teaching position I the Roland-Story Community Schools. This took me to Story City, Iowa. My teaching career lasted for 39 years. During that time, I was blessed with two children, Jefferson (1979) and Kallie (1982). So for many years my journey was consumed by the raising of my children, my teaching and friends.
After twenty-eight years, my marriage ended, the children had grown, and my journey took another turn. I was single, and I moved back to Ames. After six years, I met and fell for Debra Broich who said “Yes” to marriage in 2006. Little did she know what she was getting into. As an adult (although some may debate whether I ever grew up), I tried to give back to the community. I was a member of the Bertha Bartlett Library Board, a committee member of the Story City United Fund, a videographer for the Gilbert soccer team, and an active volunteer for the Cub Scouts and Scandinavian Days. In the time between children, teaching and community involvement, I enjoyed reading (Stephen King), movies, theater, coin collecting, watching and attending sporting events (Cubs, Bears, Iowa State, and of course Drake) and visiting historical places (always a road trip by car….”you have got to know the territory”).
Unfortunately, I was preceded in death by my parents; two brothers: Jim, 68 of Denver, Colorado, and Steven, 63 of Canton, Illinois. On the upside, I am survived by my wife, Debra of Ames; son Jefferson (Meghan); daughter, Kallie (Adam) Fields of Des Moines; grandchildren: Isla Gostele, Abby, Erin and Ethan Olberding; a brother, William (Ginny) of Coal Valley, Illinois; step-children: Allison Olberding, Matthew Olberding, Dave (Suzi) Olberding, and Alex Olberding; and nieces and nephews. Their journeys continue.
A special good-bye to all my friends (high school, college those in the communities and the occupations I had). You, my friends made my journey a fun, exciting and special one. Enjoy and safe traveling on your journeys as they are still continuing.
So, if you are reading this, then I have reached my destination on October 18, 2019, and the journey is over. Thank you for being part of it. I am ready to start my next journey. I wonder where it will lead me. Sure hope they have the Cubs game there.
