OBITUARY

JAMES M. COLBURN

James Miller Colburn was born in Chautauqua county, New York, May 14th 1839 and died in Maxwell, Iowa, February 11th, 1915 at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 27 days. When about fifteen years of age he came west with the family to Illinois and when twenty years old crossed the plains overland to California, where he remained about two years. He then returned to Illinois, living for some time at Fort Byron and Lanark in which places he was engaged in the grain and live stock business. He removed about the year 1870 to Washington township, Polk county, Iowa, where he lived continuously for forty three years. For the last two or three years he made his home in Maxwell and was president of the State Bank at Maxwell at the time of his death. By his industry and foresight he made a comfortable fortune. His integrity and reliability made him a man to be depended upon.

Mr. Colburn never married. He had one sister, Mrs. Catherine Addison, who died in Washington township, Polk county May 29 1882 and one brother, Orlin Colburn, who died at Eureka, Kansas August 31, 1914. Relatives who survive him are Nathan O. Colburn, Collinsville, Oklahoma; Edward B. Colburn, Owasco, Okla.; Mrs. Millie Darby, Eureka, Kansas; Mrs. Ella D. Sherwood, Shannon, Ill.; Edwin H. Addison, Nevada, Iowa and George W. Addison, Kansas City, Mo. These are the children of his brother and sister.

The funeral was held at his late home in Maxwell, Saturday, February 13 and was conducted by the Masonic Lodge of the place. The music was rendered by a male choir in charge of Mrs. George Olinger. A brief address was made, prayer offered and scripture read by the Rev. Wm. B. Thompson. Interment was in Mount Zion cemetery near his old home and where his sister Mrs. Catherine Addison was also buried.
