Special to The Journal.
Colo, July 12.--Daniel S. Masser was born in Reading, Berks county, Pennsylvania, January 6, 1840. Here he received his early education. In 1859 he entered the McAlesterville academy, from which institution he graduated in 1861. After graduation he taught school for a few years. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Watts of Redfield, Juanita county, Pa., on Nov. 27, 1863. To this union were born eight children, of whom three have passed before him to the great beyond.

Shortly after marriage he entered the business of butcher, which trade he followed for about twenty-five years. Since 1880 he has been engaged in the hotel business most of the time. On Feb. 7, 1879 his wife, Sarah, passed away. A few years later on Jan. 19, 1884, at Gettysburg, Pa., he was joined in marriage to Emma C. Engler. To this union was born one son, Daniel V. In 1897 he moved to Colo, at which place he resided till the time of his death July 8.

He was a loyal member of the Odd Fellow lodge for over fifty years. He believed in Christianity, and was a member of the United Evangelical church. He leaves to mourn him his wife, Emma; his daughters, Rosa Wenger of Carlisle, Pa. and Catherine Lathe of Harrisburg, Pa.; and his sons, James of Superior, Mont., Amos of Fairbanks, Alaska, John of Omaha, Neb., and Daniel V. of Castana, Iowa. Besides his immediate family he is survived by his sisters--Rose Snyder, Harriet Snyder, Emma Haines, Catherine Good and Elizabeth Kirn, all of Reading, Pa.

The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the United Evangelical church. Rev. W. C. McKinley delivered a very appropriate funeral sermon. The local order of Odd Fellows attended the services in a body and conducted the services at the grave. The pallbearers were Mr. Gill, Chas. Shepherd, Ernest Danskin, Will Hemping, Corbin Dean and Will Donaldson all past grands of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Herman Kirn and son Herman of Reading, Pa., and Mrs. Shumway of State Center, Iowa.
