Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Ellen Margaret Eberline Landon, 97, of Ames passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Northridge Village in Ames, Iowa. A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Ames, Iowa. Visitation will be at 10:00 am, with the service to follow at 11:00 am.
Ellen was the daughter of Harry and Pearl (Hamersly) Eberline of rural Marshalltown. She was born in Steamboat Rock, Iowa on March 25, 1922, where she lived until she was 2 years old. Her family then moved to a farm south of Marshalltown, where she attended a one room school with only one teacher for grades 1-8. She then attended Marshalltown High School. In 1939, she graduated 3rd in her class. After graduation, she attended Marshalltown Junior College and Iowa State College where she majored in journalism and home economics. While reporting for the Marshalltown Times Republican, she routinely interviewed service men home on leave. It was Keith Landon, who was of VERY special interest. By the time his three-month leave was ending, and he was returning to Okinawa, Japan, they were almost engaged, and were married January 30, 1946. Keith and Ellen were best friends for 67 years, until his death in 2013.
Ellen was a journalist. She wrote for the Chicago Herald, Marshalltown Times Republican, Ames Daily Tribune, and the Iowa State Highway Commission. She was proud to work in Public Relations for the City of Ames for 24 years until her retirement in 1992. Her passion for the City of Ames never faded.
Left to cherish her memories are her two children Nancy Hemphill and Julie Huisman (Tom), all of Ames. She had five grandchildren Becky (Aaron) Rogers of Ames, Katie (Nate) Molstad of Ankeny, Kevin Huisman of Ames, Melissa Huisman of Austin, Texas and Karina (Mark Kendall – fiancé) Huisman of Manning, Iowa. She also had four great grandchildren – Allison and Jacob Rogers of Ames, Bianca McConkey of Ogden and Lincoln Molstad of Ankeny.
Beyond her family, Keith and Ellen had an exceptional network of cherished extended family and friends. Fun, travel and adventures were always a big part of their lives. Ellen was a member of First Christian Church, PEO Chapter LN, Ames Golf and Country Club, Theta Chi, numerous bridge clubs, and volunteered for many civic projects and organizations. Her hobbies included reading, writing, photography, politics, gardening, cooking, golf, fishing, playing the piano, and playing “33” rpm records at high volume as she cleaned the house.
Ellen was predeceased by her husband Keith, her son in law Monty Hemphill, her mother Pearl Eberline, her father Harry Eberline, her brother Donald Eberline, and her sister in law Ruth Eberline.
Arrangements are under the care of Adams Funeral Home of Ames, Iowa. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ames History Museum (formerly Ames Historical Society).
