Ethyleen Geneva Braathun
February 8, 1924 - July 22, 2019Ethyleen Geneva Braathun, age 95, of Story City, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019 at her home in Story City.
Ethyleen Cole was born and raised in Roland, graduated from Roland High School and went on to attend Waldorf College in Forest City. She married Aaron Braathun, her high school sweetheart, on October 20, 1945. They were married over 67 years and focused a great deal of that time raising their family and leading by being living examples for all the grandchildren and great-grands.
Ethyleen worked at Ames In-Cross Hybrids, the Roland Record Newspaper, and the Roland-Story Schools. She served at Bergen Lutheran Church for several years as Parish Secretary, and many years as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Bergen Choir and Women’s Triple-Trio. She was also a long-time member of the Wa-Tan-Ye & Friends in Service organizations, helping accomplish service projects of the town of Roland.
Ethyleen is survived by her children: Linda (Dave) Donohue of Roland, Don (Cathy) Braathun of Story City, and Janice (Mark) Billerbeck of Radcliffe; grandchildren: Jason, Jenni, Stephanie, Stacie, Jon, Rachel, Greta, and Cole; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Clare Ann Stubbs; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and friends, neighbors, and caregivers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Inez Cole; her husband, Aaron; and a brother Joel Cole.
Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 P.M. on Friday, July 26, 2019 in the Chapel at the Households of Bethany in Story City. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 27, 2019 in the Chapel at the Households of Bethany. Burial will be in the Roland Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Soderstrum Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for Ethyleen’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ethyleen’s name may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Bethany Life Chaplaincy Fund.
