Funeral Services for Weir Johnson
Huxley, Sept. 11--Funeral services for Wier Johnson were held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Fjeldberg church with Dr. J. N. Andersen in charge. Two hymns were sung by the audience and a solo "Abide With Me" was sung by Miss Irene Berhow. Dr. Anderson spoke in the English language using the text "O give thanks unto the Lord, for the Lord is good, and his mercy endureth forever." Mrs. L. S. Kloster of Des Moines, a niece of the deceased sand "My God how wonderful thou art." Pall bearers were Albert and Wier Birkestrand, Andrew, Lars and Wier Ritland, and Nels Sydnes. Interment was in the Fjeldberg cemetery south of town.
Wier Johnson was born July 28, 1859 of the parents Mr. and Mrs. Weir Johnson, at the old Johnson homestead east of Huxley where Wier Birkestrand now lives. He had four brothers, John, Ole, Simon and Lars and four sisters, Eli Guri, Anna (Mrs. T. N. Sydnes) and Seri (Mrs. Ole Ritland) all of whom have preceded him in death except Simon who lives near Pukwana, S. D. Mr. Johnson who was unmarried, made his home with relatives and lived at the home of his sister-in-law Mrs. J. W. Johnson at Huxley, for a number of years before going to the Story county home last fall. He had been failing in health for some time and was bedfast for a month or more. He was a victim of anemia. He passed away at noon on Monday, Sept. 3 at the county home. The body was brought to the Larson Funeral home at Huxley where it remained until the hour of the funeral at church. He reached an age of 75 years one month and six days.
Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were, his brother Simon Johnson and son Franklin and Henry Sampson of Pukwana, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hughes of Sioux City, Mrs. L. S. Kloster and Mr. and Mrs. Nels Ersland of Des Moines, Mrs. Laird Harris of Ames, John Legvold of Madrid, Dr. Hans Lee of Toledo, O., Jake Ersland of near Nevada and possibly others.
