Funeral Held Today From the Church of the Visitation--Was a Pioneer.
Grandma Pierce died at the home of the daughter, Mrs. N. P. Jones, in Des Moines Saturday, after an illness of several weeks. The funeral will be held today from the Church of the Visitation, after which the remains will be laid to rest by the side of her departed husband in St. Ambrose cemetery.
Mrs. Pierce's maiden name as Alice Monaghan and she was born in County Monagham, Ireland, and came to this country when but a child with the family of her parents, settling in New York state where she lived until grown, when she was united in marriage to Edward Pierce, at Lima, May 27, 1855.
Mr. and Mrs. Pierce came to Iowa in 1874 and settled on the old Pierce homestead six miles south of this city. There they continued to reside until about four years ago when they gave up active work and retired to this city, where they purchased themselves a little home in the south part of the city on Oak street. A year ago last spring they went to Des Moines to enjoy a visit with their daughters and the husband was taken ill and died on April 17, 1904, since which time his sorrowing companion had continued to make her home with her daughters in Des Moines, coming up occasionally to visit with her son Edward, Jr., at Shipley and her many friends in and around Nevada.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pierce, five of whom survive them, one son dying in infancy. The surviving children are Edward Pierce, jr., of Shipley, Mrs. N. P. Jones, Mrs. James Nugent and Mrs. O. E. Pearson of Des Moines and Mrs. Alice Murphey of Pipestone, Minn.
The many Nevada friends of the deceased will sympathize with the sorrowing children inthis, their hour of bereavement.
